hnla fire engineering projects

Cardiff University

We are currently working on our second project for Cardiff University in the design of a new teaching and research building for the Neurosciences Faculty. Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques were used to design a four storey atrium. This enabled the architects to provide a building design which was outside the scope of standard guidance.

South Wales Police Cardiff Bay

This £20m landmark building provides a new Headquarters and police station for South Wales Police. The project includes state of the art facilities and houses around 250 staff. The project includes a 60 cell custody suite. hnla Fire Engineers worked with the Police, Stradform and Capita to provide an overall fire strategy which balances a requirement for security with fire safety.

Sofidel Intertissue

hnla Fire Engineering has recently concluded its third project for Intertissue. One of these was to carry out an analysis using computational fluid dynamics to evaluate the means of escape at the £70m Intertissue plant in South Wales. The factory is Europe’s most modern fully integrated paper mill and produces 600 million rolls of household tissue a year. The analysis enabled hnla to recommend changes to the fire strategy which resulted in savings in excess of £200,000.

Quinn Therm

hnla Fire Engineering provided a full fire strategy for the design of an 86,000m2 facility to manufacture Polyisocyanurate and Polyurethane insulation panels. The use of computational analysis enabled hnla to overcome problems with distances to exits from the building whilst saving building costs.

Kettering Conference Centre and Lighthouse Theatre

The project involved the conversion of an existing Leisure Centre into a multifunctional facility for conference, leisure and entertainment. The new facility includes the new purpose built Lighthouse Theatre. Conference facilities are available for over 1,500 people as well as entertainment for up to 2,000.
